#WrongfulConvictionDay: Innocence Project / Dallas Marathon Update

Given the current environment and restrictions associated with COVID-19, the 50th anniversary of the BMW Dallas Marathon Festival has been moved to the weekend of April 30 – May 2, 2021.

Though it is disappointing to have to wait a few more months, it's a sigh of relief to know we will be safe while running in close quarters. The race organizers also offered a virtual race in December, but for my first marathon, I want to have the whole experience, in-person, so I am willing to wait.

That also means you get a few more months to donate and help those who are fighting wrongful convictions and wrongful incarnations!

Today is #WrongfulConvictionDay and is a great time to highlight all the wonderful work that The Innocence Project and all their wonderful partner organizations in The Innocence Network are doing.

• POLICY. The Innocence Project is working to pass state laws to address police misconduct through greater transparency and accountability and is advocating for legislation that would provide access to police misconduct records in several states.

• TESTING. They are working on justice for clients like Pervis Payne, a Black man with an intellectual disability, who is scheduled for execution on December 3, 2020. With hard work and excellent pro bono partners, The Innocence Project was able to secure a win when the Shelby County Criminal Court ordered DNA testing of crime scene evidence that has never been tested before.

• EXONERATION. The Innocence Project secured a release for Robert DuBoise, who was convicted based on unreliable bite mark evidence and jailhouse informant testimony. DNA exonerated DuBoise, and he was released after spending 37 years in jail.
